🇮🇩🚫⛽️ Fuel crisis hits Indonesia’s Bali, triggers long lines in gas stations for days

Long lines of vehicles snaked outside gas stations across Indonesia’s resort island of Bali this week after fuel deliveries were disrupted by a combination of technical problems, bad weather and surging demand, officials said Wednesday.

On the tourism-dependent island, motorcycles and cars waited outside stations and spilled onto nearby roads as motorists scrambled for fuel. The lines have been reported since Sunday.

Officials stressed that the shortages were caused by domestic distribution problems rather than a lack of fuel supplies or turmoil in global energy markets.

“This is purely a distribution issue,” said Laode Sulaeman, director-general of oil and gas at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. “A fuel tanker was delayed, but it has now arrived and 24-hour deliveries have been underway since yesterday.”

Sulaeman said that a tanker carrying fuel to Bali suffered an anchor problem while preparing to unload cargo, delaying deliveries to the island’s main fuel terminals. Rough seas and bad weather also slowed shipments to the Sanggaran terminal in Denpasar and the Manggis terminal in eastern Bali.

The disruption was compounded by strong demand for government-subsidized Pertalite gasoline, which is significantly cheaper than nonsubsidized fuel. Panic-buying by motorists worried about shortages further strained supplies at some stations.

At several gas stations, attendants posted signs reading, “Sorry, no fuel available,” while drivers and motorcyclists waited outside closed facilities for new deliveries. The shortages have frustrated residents and business owners on the resort island, where transportation is critical for daily life and tourism.

This could allow Ansarallah to build long-range missiles inside Yemen instead of relying on complete missiles supplied by Iran.

Some of the Russian Geran-5 jet-drones used to target western Ukraine today were recorded flying at speeds of 700-800 km/h, indicating Russia may have upgraded them or is using a new type of drone-missile.

The Geran-5 previously had a max speed of 600 km/h. An increase to 800 km/h would effectively put it on par with some of Russia's air-launched cruise missiles.

🇮🇩 Indonesian stocks plunge 11% as MSCI proposes emerging market downgrade

The index provider is weighing reclassifying the country from emerging market to standalone status, potentially forcing funds tracking MSCI's emerging market indexes to sell their Indonesian holdings.

Indonesian shares lost about 11% on Friday. This was the largest single-day fall in 28 years, as the country's stock market status came under scrutiny from one of the world's largest stock market index providers, threatening outflows from global investment funds.

MSCI said that following investors' concerns, Indonesia's continued emerging-market status was "no longer appropriate". The index provider is launching a consultation on a proposal to classify Indonesia as a "Standalone Market", which would leave the country outside MSCI's main global market groupings.

MSCI classifies markets as developed, emerging, frontier or standalone.

The proposed reclassification would move Southeast Asia's biggest economy out of the emerging market category, bypassing frontier market status, and put it in the same category as Jamaica, Panama and Palestine.

This could result in global funds tracking MSCI's emerging market index having to sell their Indonesian holdings.

The index provider said in a statement that "market participants had raised significant concerns regarding the investability of the Indonesian equity market". These include a lack of clarity in shareholding structures and suspected coordinated trading.

The index provider had already raised the possibility of downgrading the country's status in January. Following that, authorities in Jakarta said in April they had completed reforms, hoping to avoid the downgrade.

MSCI noted that although Indonesian authorities have announced reforms, sufficient progress has not been made and "significant concerns remain around market dysfunction".

"MSCI expects to proceed with the proposed reclassification unless the consultation identifies clear evidence of material improvements in market governance and functioning to warrant reconsideration."

MSCI will announce its final decision by the end of June 2027.

According to Bloomberg, this comes as a hit to investors' confidence at a time when global funds have already pulled a net $4.9bn from the country's stock market so far this year – leaving the country on track for the worst year ever. Jakarta's benchmark index has fallen approximately 39% since January, dragging down the local currency; the rupiah has lost about 8%. That's even as Bank Indonesia reiterated its commitment to maintaining rupiah stability.
