Store områder er fremdeles lite utforsket. Spesielt er kunnskapen om dyphavets natur og rolle lite kjent. Forskerne anslår at vi ikke vet noen ting om minst 80 prosent av havet. Vi har faktisk mer kunnskap om både overflaten til månen og Mars enn havet.

I dag foregår det ingen gruvedrift på havbunnen fra dyphavsområder i verden. Og fordi vi vet for lite, må vi være svært forsiktige. Norge har foreslått å åpne for denne industrien, og kan bli første land i verden med å sette i gang med destruktiv gruvedrift på havbunnen.

WWF Verdens naturfond krever at Norge ikke åpner for gruvedrift på havbunnen før det er bevist at slike inngrep kan skje uten tap av dyreliv, leveområder og opprettholdelse av naturens egne livsviktige funksjoner.

Large areas are still little explored. In particular, little is known about the nature and role of the deep sea. The scientists estimate that we know nothing about at least 80 percent of the ocean. We actually have more knowledge about both the surface of the moon and Mars than the ocean.

Today, there is no mining on the seabed from deep-sea areas in the world. And because we know too little, we must be very careful. Norway has proposed to open up this industry, and could become the first country in the world to start destructive mining on the seabed.
